PW’s comments about selected freshmen sires whose first crops are getting ready to race in 2003. Many thanks to Lauren Stich (DRF) for background material.

First, the potential quick ones:

Artax (Marquetry): Won the Breeders’ Cup Sprint; his 2 yr olds should win early.

Bianconi (Danzig):   Speed on the dirt, then to the turf.

Crafty Friend (Crafty Prospector):      Speed up to a mile.

Diamond (Mr. Prospector): His 2 yr olds may surprise.

Doneralle Court (Seattle Slew): Expect summer wins at 6f to a mile.

Event of the Year (Seattle Slew): Sprint winners at 2; maybe longer at 3. Check the mare.

Exploit (Storm Cat): Early wins on dirt, then to turf.

Forestry (Storm Cat):           If there were a morning line on new sires, this one would be 8/5.

Free House (Smokester): He won graded stakes at 2, 3, 4, and 5. You take it from there.

General Royal (A.P. Indy): Early wins on dirt, then to turf.

Good and Tough (Carson City): Early New York bred sprints.

Holzmeister (Woodman): Look for his mating with a mare by Valid Appeal, Copelan, Phone Trick or Mt. Livermore. They will be QUICK and win EARLY.

Leestown (Seattle Slew): He will put SPEED up to one mile on Louisiana mares, and EARLY.

Lil’s Lad (Pine Bluff):           Potential to win early and often.

Limit Out (Northern Flagship): This Florida stallion will bless his runners with SPEED, especially for mares with My Dear Girl lines. He won both his starts at two.

Mazel Trick (Phone Trick):  1:19.97 for 7 furlongs at Hollywood; that’s fast.

Richter Scale (Habitony): 1:07.95 for 6 furlongs at Gulfstream; that’s quick.

Old Trieste (A. P. Indy): Expensive offsprings, but should win early and often.

Sea of Success (Storm Cat): Early bloomers up to 7 furlongs.

Slew Gin Fizz (Relaunch): Strong 2 year old potential, any distance, surface or condition.

Stormin Fever (Storm Cat): Early wins on dirt and turf.

The Silver Move (Silver Buck): This sire won most of his races at 2.

Time Bandit (Time for a Change): Another whose runners will excel at 2.

Wagon Limit (Conquistador Cielo): Early wins in sprints and then up to a mile.

Western Borders (Gone West): Early NY bred sprints; then a turf win or two.

Second, some late developers:

City by Night (Slew City Slew): Will blossom at 3.

Crypto Star (Cryptoclearance): Remember Volponi in the Breeders’ Cup?

Expelled (Explodent): Might surprise early on dirt, but best later on turf.

Frisk Me Now (Mister Frisky): Don’t expect 105-1 like the Hutcheson, but tab.

Gold Regent (Mr. Prospector): Texas mile specialist.

Horse Chestnut (Fort Wood): This South African champion was injured after winning the Broward handicap, or he might have been a great one. His offspring must be tabbed for turf as they mature.

K One King (Apalachee): Look for his runners to blossom at 3, dirt or turf.

Malibu Moon (A.P. Indy): He will have Maryland juvenile winners, some of whom will later be excellent on turf.

Menifee (Harlan): He will sire several who will win stakes at 3.

Military (Danzig): Supreme turf lines, but his dam, Wavering Girl, was a Canadian champion at 2, so juvenile wins on dirt would be no surprise.

Mud Route (Strawberry Road): The “down under” genes provide speed that can “run all day, any track, any surface.

Real Quiet (Quiet American): This Kentucky Derby and Preakness winner, whose second dam is a full sister to Kentucky Derby and Preakness winner Majestic Prince, and to Crowned Prince, an English champion at 2, has the potential to produce some serious runners.

Sahm (Mr. Prospector): Look for this one to sire turf winners at 3 and 4. Maybe an early surprise on dirt, since speed is in the blood lines.

Scatmandu (Storm Cat): He should produce middle distance stakes winners at 3 and 4.

Silver Charm (Silver Buck): The quality of the mare is the key. Late winners at a mile+.

Stravinsky (Nureyev): Perfect blood lines for wire-to-wire turf wins.

Tactical Cat (Storm Cat): Tab this one for “surprise” win on the turf.

Victory Gallop (Cryptoclearance): His runners will blossom at 3 and 4, a mile or more.

Wild Event(Wild Again): Late developers, dirt or turf, mile or more.

Wild Wonder (Wild Again): He won 7 stakes, early and late, dirt and turf. Tab.
