How to Play and win at Roulette

Roulette is one of the most exciting games you can play in the casino. It’s fast pace and non-stop action make it a personal favorite.

Roulette is a table game where the dealer spins a ball around a slotted wheel. There are a total of 37 or 38 slots on a roulette wheel. (37 Slots for a European “Single 0” wheel and 38 for an American double zero “0 and 00” wheel)

Each Slot has a unique number 1 – 36 and either “0” or “ 0 and 00”.

THE BASICS :

Before you can place a bet, you will need to buy chips from the dealer. Each player will have a set of  unique color chips. The value of the chips will be determined when you buy in. Many games let you use 25 or 50 cent chips, others will have a minimum of $1 or even $5 chips.

Note: A great way to learn is on a low limit game with 25 cent chips

You will need to bet at least the table minimum on each spin. You can bet on two types of bet:

Inside: Betting inside refers to placing bets on the individual numbers 1-36, 0, 00. You can bet on any combination of numbers or just one number.

You need to bet the table minimum on your total inside bet: If you are playing at a $5.00 table with $1 chips, you can place 5 chips on any combination of numbers.

Inside Bets

One number - Chip is placed on one specific number
Two numbers - Chip is placed on a line between two numbers
Three numbers - Chip is placed on the outside line of the row of three numbers or on the (0,1,2) or (0,2,00) or (2,3,00)
Four numbers - Chip is placed on the corner connecting four numbers
Five numbers - Chip is placed on the line connecting the 0, 00, 1, 2, 3. This is the only five number bet on the roulette table and is  also called "the basket"
Six numbers - Chip is placed on the outside line of two rows of three numbers

Outside Bets

YOU MUST BET AT LEAST THE TABLE MINIMUM ON EACH OUTSIDE BET THAT YOU PLACE

Dozens - Chip is placed on the box marked 1st 12, 2nd 12 or 3rd 12. The winning number must hit within the dozen range of your bet. 0 and 00 would be losing numbers.
Columns - Chip is placed at the bottom of the long column of numbers. The winning number must hit within the column of your bet. 0 and 00 would be losing numbers.
Red or Black - Chip is placed on the box marked Red or Black, referring to the background of the winning number. 0 and 00 would be losing numbers.
Odd or Even - Chip is placed on the box marked Odd or Even, referring to the winning number. 0 and 00 would be losing numbers. 1-18 or 19-36 - Chip is placed on the box marked 1-18 or 19-36. The winning number must hit within the range of your bet. 0 and 00 would be losing numbers.

Don’t be fooled, the odds in Roulette are geometric. No matter what you bet, the odds are the same.  You are getting the same odds on a split that you would get by playing the number straight up. If you place any bet that covers more than 1 number calculate your win as follows:

Winning Bet Amount x Payout =  (35 –  $1.00 for each losing number)

If you were to bet on 3 separate numbers and one hit you would get $35.00 for the number you won but you would lose $2.00 on the losing numbers = $33.00 which is the same as betting $3.00 on a row 3 x $11.00.

Dozen or Column $12.00 bet = 24.00 net win = $35.00 – 11.00
Black or Red, Even or Odd: $18.00 bet = $18.00 net win = $35.00 - 17.00

Make sure you know what the house edge is.

On Double Zero Roulette, it is 1 – (36/38) = Approximately 5.26 %

Some casino’s surrender (very few) ˝ of even money bets on Double Zero roulette and this drastically changes the odds (closer to 2.7% single zero).

On Single Zero Roulette, the odds are: 1 – (36/37) = 2.70%

There are several places in Las Vegas to play Single Zero Roulette - On the Strip: Bellagio, Caesars, Mandalay Bay, Paris to name a few ... but also check out Nevada Palace and the Klondike II in Henderson for low limit single zero roulette.
