Downtown Las Vegas Hotels:
Las Vegas offers two very unique areas to enjoy yourself. The Strip is
...well...The Strip ...Volcano's, Towers, Gondola's, Pirates and Pyramids but
the other side of Vegas is Downtown. There is still plenty to do with a lot of
choices for great food, clubs, attractions, and gambling. The real difference is
that when you are Down Town, you really don't need a car. There are 14 casino's
located within a few blocks of each other. Freemont Street is now a pedestrian
only walk way where you can take in "The Fremont Street Experience"
which is a 3D light show that is shown on the canopy that now covers Fremont
Street. The vendors, shops and street performers really make for a carnival like
atmosphere. There are still the girls giving out beads and fun books in
front of the casino's and the Girls of Glitter Gulch which is really part of the
past, present and future of Fremont Street.
We suggest you stop in at all 14 casino's that are down town, but here are
our favorites:
Lady Luck is actually a block from Fremont Street but they offer a great
gaming environment. There were plenty of $3 and $5 table games including Let It
Ride. Craps $5, Roulette .50 chips. Most of the latest slots. Very reasonable
food. Rooms were very comfortable and a good value at 29-39/weeknight
65+/weekend rates. Don't miss the show "Stars of the Strip" which is
free for the price of your drink (5.95) but you would gladly pay for it.
The Golden Gate Hotel is the oldest hotel in Las Vegas. If you want Shrimp
Cocktails, this is where it started with over 25 Million served over the years.
You'll find that whole property has a very warm feel with
dark wood and old fashion style bar. While the gaming area was limited, the
staff and dealers were extremely friendly.
The Plaza is at the Top of Fremont Street ... you can't miss it. Huge gaming
area with a good selection of table games and over 1200 slot machines with all
the latest video machines, Wheel of Fortune, Adams Family, I Dream Of
Jeannie, Etc. One of the best slot clubs in the city with a free slot tournament
every day.
Main Street Station is another property owned by Boyd Gaming offering a great
Micro Brewery, 20x odds on craps and a great gaming environment.
Las Vegas Club has some of the most liberal rules on 21 that you can find.
Double down after 2,3 or 4 cards, unlimited splits on aces and pairs and any 6
cards totaling under 21 automatically wins.
Binion's Horseshoe is one of the legends of Las Vegas. Home of the World Series of Poker,
if you are a serious poker player, this is a place you have to see. The table
action is some of the hottest in Vegas in a casino that boasts that "they
will cover any bet". If you enjoy great Chinese food, Gee Joons is one of
the best in town. Recently purchased by Harrah's, the Horseshoe is still
the place for some of the best poker action in Las Vegas.
The El Cortez - Located at the end of the Fremont Street experience, The El
Cortez is one of the older properties in Las Vegas. The 9.99 Steak and Lobster
special is one of our favorites and it is a great place to find low limit games
with .25 roulette, $1 craps and $2 blackjack. There are plenty of low limit
slots with all the latest games.
